Hi Mary, RE: "They confuse the consumer PC industry with the computer industry. "

It is true that Walter has a leaning/preference towards consumer products (he just did a really nice write up about one of our advisor's consumer company), but his audience is consumers, not IT/MIS folks, so that sort of explains why the consumer slant can be a bit strong.

RE: "The PC is only a front end interface into the computer and at best it is about 20% of the computer industry."

Excellent post.

Regards,
Amy J

Mary,
The sheer stupidity of some of articles written in magazines never ceases to amaze me. It reminds me of articles written in California, where during a two year drought ( below normal rainfall), there were several sensational articles proclaiming that the weather had changed permanently. Well, for the next few years the rainfall was above normal. Twelve years later the dry spell came back, along with the same sensational articles.

There was a PC chip shortage six months ago, because demand was much higher than forecasts. Now that the demand is below the forecast of six months ago, the obituaries for the PC are being written. True there is a need for a smaller form factor computing platform, which will probably be perceived as the "cool" thing to have. Most likely this will be a repackaged PC to appeal to the latest consumer fashion dictates. Intel and the PC industry have always shown the ability to react to the needs of the marketplace. Computing and high tech are here with us for a long time.

I expressed my feelings on this issue a few weeks ago

As far as magazines and newspaper articles go, reasoned and objective articles do not sell newspapers. Sensational headlines do.
