RS.. All the grim details are right here...

sec.gov

"The Globalstar System requires regulatory authorization for two pairs of frequencies: user links (from the user to the satellites, and vice versa) and feeder links (from the gateways to the satellites, and vice versa). On January 31, 1995, the FCC authorized the construction, launch and operation of the Globalstar System and assigned bands of the radio frequency spectrum for the user links. A modification of this authorization on November 19, 1996 assigned feeder link frequencies. This license is held by L/Q Licensee"

Gateways and UT's authority!!

"AirTouch, the exclusive Globalstar service provider in the United States, has received a license for the Texas gateway, and its application for a license for Globalstar phones has been granted."

<But this was true of Iridium also. The difference, of course, is that Irid had the technical capability to bypass the "local" PSTN/PTT, and some countries are willing to permit that, probably for a nominal license fee>

Ahh!! The Beauty of Inter-Satellite links.. And everyone poo-poo'ed Iridium for their implementation
.. If only G* had this ability!!!

IT'S WORTHLESS IN BK FOLKS!! And the structure of the regulatory approvals have made it so!! The only reason Iridium was worth 25 million was because the DoD owned their own Gateway.. And are probably not too worried about "local regulatory approvals"..

<<Don't expect new Iridium to start widespread roaming until it can make "new deals" with those countries, which will often mean restarting GWs--that is to say, it has much the same problem as G* will have in a C11 scenario. >>

I would be shocked to see Iridium marketing to the public at large.. Motorola did not nurture Iridium through the BK process, to have some new company completely screw up their designs on the system.. MOT's plan for the system is DoD centric.. Condor/JEDI.. That is what Motorola wants with Iridium.. And Iridium is the key to these contracts, and Motorola knows it!! And the DoD knows it!! Why else would Motorola have continued to provide support and continue R&D on the system during the throws of Bankruptcy.. Motorola wants Condor/JEDI programs.. And they will get them!! IMO..
