I think what you pointed out, that they borrowed so much (#reply-15092000), is the best explanation on why it collapsed. With so much borrowing they became the market, making it much harder to get out (little liquidity) when the charts are moving against you. I remember how other funds were trying to guess what LTCM is holding and bet against it, as they figured LTC will be forced to cover/sell.
