The G4 is a potent processor, but I don't know if apple OS or whatever apple is using was used in this particular process. If I want to do big computing I'd stick with SGI. But G4's or compaq/dec alpha's can also make a good home grown super computing. But SGI knows how to put together 512 processor single image systems. I go with what I know first. watman.com was my playing with a bigun(32 head sgi onyx 2000) before it entered the black abyss.
