But I believe in Santa Claus. Christmas really is BOTH a religious holiday and a secular holiday, which is why it is the best holiday of the year. Gift-giving, feasts, bright colored lights, pretty decorations, lavishly ornamented Christmas trees, beautiful music, fabulous parties, getting together with the relatives and friends we haven't seen in a while, getting all dressed up in fancy clothes, greeting cards, all of that doesn't need religion to enjoy, but then the religious part is even better than Easter. People know that Easter is more important, so they try to behave that way, but everyone really thinks Christmas is best. There isn't a prettier ceremony than midnight Mass. Easter morning is more beautiful and more spectacular, but I like midnight Mass better. Everyone is sleepy, but all dressed up and on their best behavior, and all the children are excited because of Santa Claus. The story is happier, too, the story of birth, not death and rebirth. Good Friday is always so hard to take that Easter doesn't make up for it, really. Buche de Noel. Gingerbread houses. Shaped cookies. Advent candles. Wreaths on the door all decorated with red bows and fruits. Holly and evergreens draped on the mantle. The Nutcracker taken out of his box and set on the book case, laughing at everyone with his funny teeth gaping. Bowls of nuts. Poinsettias. Wrapped gifts under the Christmas tree. Mulled wine and cider. Egg nog. Christmas carols. Christmas stockings. On and on. It really is the nicest holiday of all.
