I had the same reservations about NewKidCo's first Sesame Street title, Elmo's Letter Adventure. I thought it had many drawbacks and didn't use the full potential of what a PlayStation game could be. It didn't use the "Force Feedback" feature available; it seemed limited on where you could go in the game; it had "dead ends" that didn't make sense... to me... to adults. After phone calls to many people involved in the development of the game, I found out why the game was as it was... Testing. They (CTW) had tested the game with children and made decisions based on those test studies. For instance, the original game had the "force feedback" (when a child would find a letter, etc.), but the tests found that it frightened many children, they would actually drop the controller. Remember, many of these games are for young children that don't have the same experience with console games that their older siblings have. In hindsight, it appears that CTW and NewKidCo were right about the game's "playability", because it has been a good seller for them. Also, their Disney release, Tigger's Honey Hunt and others, have been getting RAVE reviews from fans and gamers. Besides, reviews aren't everything when it comes to sales... look at Hello Kitty, it had excellent reviews and I don't believe that it had much of an effect one way or the other on sales. That is the one gripe that I still have with the company... Visibility and marketing. In this "Family Values" atmosphere that exists at this time, I believe that they should be pushing their story hard. With Partners such as Disney, CTW, Sony and others, NewKidCo should be a household word with Parents by now. Now that the Mattel fiasco is history, I believe that NewKidCo is poised to make leaps and bounds in terms of profitability and break revenue records for the forseeable future.. at least the next 2 years going into the E.T. release. My bet is that they are bought by a larger company that (finally) sees what children's games can do for their bottom line going forward. Don't sweat the reviews, look at the earnings, that is what matters most, and that is what I believe NewKidCo has finally done.
