Yes, it was closed for some time. They would announce an opening, and then it would fall through. Finally, over a year ago, it reopened, after the partners settled some litigation. The main floor looks much the same, red booths, dark green walls, a profusion of paintings, etc. This time, I ate on the second floor, also quite showy, as you may imagine. The food is always very good, sometimes excellent. I had duck with prune and port sauce......

The Tavern on the Green did not disappoint in respective of festive lights and geegaws, as one might imagine, but the menu was too limited, and mainly designed for those who want a big piece of meat or fish to show for their money. I have eaten there when the kitchen was much more imaginative and satisfactory. I suspect that the volume of customers during the holidays enforces an excessive simplicity. I had a prime rib, since that seemed safest, but it had nothing to distinguish it except the inherent tenderness of the cut.....

I purposely chose two flashy places, because I knew they would go nuts over the holidays!
