Elmer,

When traffic is heavy, the upload is very slow. DirecPC is switching to bi-directional satellite in Q1, but for now the upload speed is not very impressive.

The problems I had installing were mostly software issues.

1. They are not set up to easily use anyone other than AOL as an ISP. The setup required a lot of information about the ISP (DNS IP addresses, IP gateways, masks, subnets, etc.) Gathering all that information was a big pain. The setup program offered no help, and the really annoying thing is that it could have gathered all this information automatically.

2. I had a lot of trouble restoring my ICShare and network settings. The setup program changed the IP address of my local Internet server without telling me, and created a conflict with my Linux box.

3. The azimuth angle mark on the satellite dish stand was not clearly marked. I wasted a day trying to get a signal because they did not clearly indicate what angle the dish was oriented at.

The only reasonable way for most people to use DirecPC is to have a professional install and use AOL. If they ever want to go primetime with this, they will have to clean up their act.

Having said that, the system is now working very well (after two days of setup misery.)
