Soon those who shorted JDSU because of the stock merger will buy back to close their position.

No need to. They'll take the JDSU they get from the long-SDLI side of the arbitrage and use those shares to close the short-JDSU side of the arbitrage. Don't expect that to juice the stock.

Don't get me wrong. It's not that I don't like JDSU but I just don't want it while it's downtrending. I'll pay the extra points for the increased safety of waiting until it's in an uptrend. I've lost too much money in the past by trying to pick bottoms and by thinking that a stock just couldn't go much lower.
