They cannot let a normal cyclical downturn in the U.S. turn into a worldwide recession.

Geez Robert... I guess you've been drinking from the same trough of economic theory that I have..... <VBG>

But recall further that the Fed significantly increased liquidity last winter in order to alleviate concerns over Y2K.

Keeping rates this high for so long as been equivalent to giving the children a box of cookies and then spanking them for being gluttons.
