What the heck happened with UTI today? Up about a point in the last couple of minutes. I bought it in late October on weakness while looking for a good land driller but I sure wasn't expecting 70% in two months. One of those situations where I bought in my taxable account rather than tax-deferred. I probably would have sold for a 20-30% gain if there were no tax consequences but since the gain was taxable and I didn't need any more tax problems in 2000, I held.
I hate to bring up painful memories (I'am as scarred as anyone) but a lot of the sell decisions in the last 21 months have been, uhhhhh, premature. My most painful has probably been - in CRK at 2 1/2 and out at 4 1/4. Still in my taxable CRK from 4 1/2. Reluctance to sell because of taxes is sometimes a blessing in disguise. Any other mea culpas out there?

John

"I keep examining both my own feelings and the tone of this thread,

to try to guard against euphoria, which is my own downfall."

Exactly. And I've found it easier to pick up strong sentiment signals on other threads that are less investment and trader saavy than this one.

It's just as easy for me to be drawn into the emotions of the crowd as anyone else. At important market turning points the magnetic power of the crowd seems to be the strongest.

So taking a little time to sample sentiment can to some extent serve to separate you from group think and provide more emotional detachment and perspective than otherwise.

When I'm able to do that, it's helped me a great deal.

Have a great New Year.
