He was no more a hypocrite than the guy who knows its wrong to lie, but who lies to keep someone from harm. No doubt Jefferson enjoyed personal benefits of slavery. But he is on record, against many of his own society, of being hostile to slavery. Indeed, he enshrined the anti-slavery doctrine within the philosophy upon which America is based.

Americans from Thomas Jefferson to Martin Luther King waved the Declaration of Independence in the face of oppression and each time defeated it. This would not have been possible without Jefferson. Jefferson was but a man, and as such had frailties. But he was a great man. He belongs on Mount Rushmore-- no doubt about it. Jefferson Davis does not. And he is not.
