"The Inspired Word of God, from Into His Presence, page 42: Henry Thiessen commented on inspiration: God has revealed himself in nature, history and conscience. He has also revealed himself in his Son and in his Word. The Holy Spirit so guided and superintended the writers of the sacred text, making use of their own unique personalities, that they wrote all he wanted them to write, without excess of error. Several things must be noted: 1. Inspiration is inexplicable. It is the operation of the Holy Spirit. 2. Inspiration is limited to the authors of Scripture. Other books are not inspired in the same sense. 3. Inspiration is essentially guidance. That is the Holy Spirit supervised the selection of the materials to be used and the words to be employed in writing. 4. The Holy Spirit preserved the authors from error and from omission. 5. Inspiration extends to the words of the Bible, not merely to thoughts and concepts. Dr. Stanley’s comments: Although these concepts may seem difficult to grasp, they show us one thing: God has taken great care to preserve His Word. It is His gift to you and me for our instruction and encouragement as we grow in our love for Him." copyrighted 2000, Thomas Nelson Publishers. This is the from In Touch, with Dr. Stanley's WebSite: The Scriptures We believe that "all Scripture is given by inspiration of God." (2 Timothy 3:16) We understand this to mean that the whole Bible is inspired in that holy men of God "were moved by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:21) to write the very words of Scripture. We believe that this divine inspiration extends equally and fully to all parts of Scripture as it appeared in the original manuscripts. We believe that the whole Bible in the originals is therefore without error. We believe that all the Scriptures center about the Lord Jesus Christ in His person and work, in His first and second coming, and hence that no portion, even of the Old Testament, is properly read or understood until it leads to Him. We also believe that all Scripture was designed for our practical instruction. (Luke 24:27, 44; John 5:39; Romans 15:4; 1 Corinthians 10:11; 2 Timothy 3:16) Going back to your comments about the character of God, I absolutely believe that God is the definition of "character." I believe He is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient and sovereign. I will start with that. Happy New Year!
