Verve,

<< Eric, do you have any idea what percentage of a carriers revenue can be attributed to country to country roaming? >>

I don't handy, but I've got some data stuffed in the archives that may be responsive to your question. I'll try to find what I've got and will post if it has substance.

<< There's a chunk of change to be made with these roaming charges. >>

For sure. Big multiplier when you get into data. Also gets more complex. Requires a pretty sizeable investment. IN networks. Billing systems, et al. Omnipoint got burned real bad 3 or 4 years ago when they had mucho roaming agreements in place without sufficient roaming apparatus to back it up.

GSMA has had a huge focus on roaming for years - voice first, then SMS data - (as has AWS in the UWCC group and probably BS & SBC to a lesser degree). There has traditionally been much less focus within CDG until recently. Many journalists have called this the "Achilles Heel" of CDMA.

As for:

>> Here are the top 3 reasons I come up with why umts has appeared to gather so much support with carriers.

1) Roaming capabilities, meaning a more attractive network and service for the consumer (and more importantly) roaming revenue
2) Manufacturing scale and parts availability
3) Vendor influence
<<

These are, absolutely, 3 good reasons why "umts has appeared to gather so much support with carriers".

<< Are there any others you'd add to the list? >>

Probably.

I still owe you a response (another thread) on a similar question.

I'll respond there (soon as possible) and cross link here.
