"IBM Looks ot Grab Sun Market Share With 3-D computer"

page A5

The package consists of an IBM Model 170 workstation and graphic software called 3-D graphics accelerators.
The workstation looks like a large desktop with a floor-mounted disk drive. The device uses copper chips that are speedier and more efficient than traditional chips. The workstation goes up against the UltraSparc II from Sun. Big Blue says the product was introduced at this time to exploit what it claims are soft spots in Sun's Unix workstation business. IBM also says it scored a coup in mid-December by getting Columbus, Ohio based Great Northern Consulting Services Inc. , a major e=reseller of Sun servers in the Midwest, to start selling IBM Unix servers.
IBM contends that it will outperform the Sun Blade 1000.
