News of the Weird:

>>NEW ORLEANS, Dec.30 - In 33
seasons, the New Orleans Saints
had never won a playoff game. It was the
worst streak of postseason futility in
professional sports. So they fixed things
in a peculiar, local way. They brought in
a woman identified as Yoruba Priestess
Ava Kay Jones, accompanied by her
associates, called the Voodoo
Macumba.

Because the Superdome is built on an
ancient burial ground, the priestess cast a
spell outside the building before today's
National Football Conference wild-card
game. Then she brought incense and a
serpent inside and onto the 50-yard line
for chanting and dancing to beseech the
spirits to ``rid the dome of all curses.''

Three hours later, the Saints had a
spooky 31-28 victory over the St. Louis
Rams in the wild-card round of the
National Football League playoffs. They
won despite a three-touchdown rally by
the Rams in the fourth quarter. Earlier,
three of the Saints' touchdowns were scored on passes from quarterback
Aaron Brooks to wide receiver Willie Jackson.<<
