Intel does seem to have lost its way... Charles, here's another Reg article that points in the same direction. It's a bad idea to underestimate a company with the size, cash and clout of Intel. Nonetheless the little pieces are certainly seeming to indicate that INTC is in a serious internal mess that's being meticulously hidden from public view. This article says that "Intel has always said that IA-64 would not come into its own until 2003-2004". Everyone with a memory cell left knows that is just a plain, flat-out bald-faced lie. All this stuff just serves to strengthen my belief that IA-64 will NEVER be any kind of force in the market in any form, McKinley or otherwise. Add to that the P4 situation, and whoa, Nellie. theregister.co.uk It makes it all the more frustrating for me, since Intel's major strategy fiasco represents an enormous opportunity for Sun that they're blowing with their own tardiness. I sure hope nobody in Sun management is saying, "Well, they're slipping IA-64 so we might as well not worry about slipping SPARC"...but that's what it looks like to me. If Sun actually stops screwing up on USIII in 2001, this year could be a huge win for them. However, the dates will speak for themselves. (I'm also worried about IBM, but they always find a way to scuttle themselves.) --QS

re since the X86's main strength is the legacy code available for it what is the sparc 's main strength (is there any such thing) re Ideally, they'd embrace JAVA, you mean that aside from ellison and mcnealy there is someone else who buys in in the crap? re And now AMD is making things "interesting" (as in the Chinese curse) for them. they have made it intersting ever since they are around, no? oh but this time it's gonna be real cool, promise. wunder aus dresden.
