In college, I went to rock parties to dance, and would generally leave after a few. Too much noise, didn't like to drink a lot, too many female complications. There was a period where I would just dance with this very plain girl that I knew, someone who knew nothing would happen between us, but danced well. I got tired of having every dance be implicitly dramatic..... I like Die Hard. It is fun. But Gladiator is much more engaging, much more substantial. I don't know about the overall historicity of the film, but the Crowe character is just the type that Roman moralists hoped to create. He is Aeneas, he is Cincinnatus, he is the man who craves private pursuits but reveres the gods and does his duty. Joachim was very good in 8mm, but it was an ambiguous film, as you say. I do not share your enthusiasm for Seven, although I admire both Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey. I thought it was mainly disgusting, in a way that, to me, seemed unredeemed. To Die For: I think that black comedy remains the correct term. If one followed the Pamela Smart story in the papers, upon which it was based, it was ready made for some kind of oddball treatment. The image of the sister skating over the pond where the vixen was "buried" was particularly satisfying...... On Mean Streets: I think the matter of good and evil is uncategorical, like Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction. It is not a question of who is good or bad, but of the moral sensitivities that remain even beyond the circle of decent society. You are right, Charlie is not quite trapped, although there is a heavy expectation and he would be exiling himself to refuse to be groomed. The main thing is that interests me is the way in which he negotiates with God, as it were, to prove that he is not a bad guy through and through...... I am glad my uncles are nowhere near me. One is normal, if a bit of a prick: he is an orthodondist who has been married a few times. Another has been in trouble, and got kicked off a police force for dubious behavior, but has managed to avoid serious jail time. But there are a couple who have been in and out of trouble since they were teens, occasionally shaping up, only to get into trouble again. One of them killed someone, and beat it down to involuntary manslaughter, even though he let the guy bleed to death without seeking medical help or running away. It may be that the guy "deserved it" for assaulting his girlfriend. It may have been a drug deal turned sour. Fortunately, I have no idea......
