Wow, fast response. I was just heading to the shower. For the top-most wage earners the loss of taxes paid is an inconvenience or irritation. I know a couple of em, and they complain some but mostly hire accountants to figure out how to save as much as possible (living trusts, etc.), and go on. They don't need the money anyway. The middle class have a proportionately larger chunk of money gone. That is, they would actually notice the difference in retirement lifestyle or present lifestyle, if they had the money. That is the vote, which if motivated, might become problematic. But in addition, your proviso is much in question, is it not? Just as there is enough food in the world to take care of everyone, there is enough money if it were used properly. I find many people giving charitably beyond taxes, and the money going to better use.

Poet, this is the kind of self-interest that is rumbling around under the surface, I think. My in-laws, with finite resources, gave to charities for Christmas in our name. I like it. At the same time it is not a gift from us to a charity. They are also traveling a ton, which is also nice. But it shows less interest in passing on security to progeny. It's their money and right. I just notice the change in emphasis I think in part because it looks like everything is going to be o.k. for the kids.
