Aus what about all the generic sellers of CompactFlash?
Fry's has generic 64 mb on sale for 79.95, while Best Buy's
Sunday ad has Sandisk 64mb listed for 169.99 with a free
reader/writer instantly with purchase, a 29.99 value...

The generic sellers of CompactFlash are a problem because we
don't know any of the details of '987 licensing, Jesse. I find
it hard to believe that companies like PNY, Memorex and other
generics will be willing to sell CF at a loss or low margin.
Certainly consumers may not be able to discriminate by brand,
thus price may be a central selling point. That would be bad.

I went by the largest BestBuy near us today. They are sold out
of all SanDisk products except two 32MB CF cards and one
128MB CF card. There is no SmartMedia in the store at all.
There were rain checks for the 64MB SanDisk CF and card reader.
(This is the deal that you mentioned in your post, Jess.)
The only non-SanDisk CompactFlash left was PNY (about six
or eight 32MB cards) and about a half dozen Lexar cards
(48 and 64MB). PNY had a price of $99.99 with a $20 rebate.
IMHO, the Lexar cards were priced not to sell.

The general trend for most of the major retailers is to highlight
one or two brands. SanDisk, Lexar and Simple Technologies are
by far the most visible. I wonder if second and third tier
card manufacturers are stocked in order to assure some availability.

In an unrelated matter I am floored by the volume of SmartMedia
that was sold this holiday season. I think it is some phenomenal
amount for BestBuy and Circuit City stores near me not to have
any shelved at all.
