Is The Patriot fresh or profound? Perhaps not. I think it is somewhat fresh in that it is not at all self- conscious about showing the importance of vengeance in making things right, and that it is somewhat profound in showing the deep and irreducible connection between one's home and one's country, and the inability to standby neutrally as one's family and friends are drawn in...... I did not find the object of desire ugly. Although his reverie heightened her beauty, as when she is covered in rose petals, she is quite lovely, actually. So there is a crucial difference. Second, obviously there is not salvation in sex. But there is an intimation of something more in romantic love. These are characters looking for some small thing to hold onto, some intimation that all is not "matter and the void".......
