No, I told you, 14. Actually, it was based on the unwillingness to invade and secure the North, for fear of Chinese involvement and the uncontainable widening of the war. It was also based on rumors of widespread corruption in the South Vietnamese government, and the relative timidity of southern troops. Finally, it was based on the terrible brutality of the war, the use of children on suicide missions, the viciousness with which villagers were treated if they had cooperated with Americans, the whole corrupting mess which led to incidents like My Lai and the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians because Americans did not know who to trust........
