They have essential IP on some elements of the core but (I don't think) they control the core. The core is Wideband CDMA operating asynchronously with 5 MHz carrier. They attempted to control the core (after the fact).

I would take it one step beyond that analysis to say that the core is the CDMA technology that is in the public domain. Thus, there's no control of the core. Qualcomm's sustainable, competitive advantage lies in the way it controls its innovations of CDMA. That's important to me because, in the end, it really doesn't matter what we call the core; what matters is the competitive advantage and how long it can be sustained.

But, isn't this still CDMA at its core and things like asynch and which carrier are part of the flavors?
