Many people use photovoltaic shingles -- apparently some architects like the way they look. They make these panels stand up to some pretty tough hailstorms as well. But yes, I think you're right that it's common to leave some space between the panels and the roof for ventilation, and that would keep your home cooler.

Actually the panels would shade that roof, too.
