Political meddling - I really have a hard time imagining price controls or additional taxes on profits. The politicians can easily comfort voters with relief for high energy prices in some easy way.

What to do for businesses burned by high prices may be another question. I suspect there will be many business who cannot compete at the higher prices we will be seeing going forward.

For my own greedy purposes I would not mind some method of motivating / coercing E&P's to spend these high profits on E&P. Presently I am more or less 50% E&P & 50% driller/service and plan on sliding over to 80% driller / service over the next few weeks.

Like it has been said many times over future earnings growth comparisons going forward for E&P's are going to get harder and harder to compare too. For drillers and service companies the earnings growth will have a much more sustainable growth.
