I must admit that we did make that transition to a post wartime economy pretty well. At the time of the fall of the Soviet Union, that was a concern of mine because we had been on that economy for 45 years by that time, we never really wound down from WWII.

I find it incredibly amusing that the biggest proponents of less government are the same ones that want to increase it. Military buildups, due to their nature, involve more than just buying more guns. There is the whole infrastructure that is concerned, and that will increase the role of the government in the economy no matter the attempts to contain it.
