U.S. averages poised for steady open

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - The major U.S. averages are poised for an open on the steady side Tuesday on the first trading day of the New Year.

March S&P 500 futures added 1.80 points, or 0.1 percent, and were trading roughly 0.30 point above fair value, Nasdaq futures, meanwhile, rose 30.50 points, or 1.3 percent.

In the bond market, the 10-year Treasury note added 2/32 to yield ($TNX) 5.08 percent while the 30-year government bond edged up 1/32 to yield ($TYX) 5.45 percent.

The week's economic calendar will be packed with information about the state of the U.S. economy, as it includes key releases such as the December employment report, the December National Association of Purchasing Management Index and November new home sales. In the currency arena, dollar/yen headed north for a sixth straight session, adding 0.4 percent to 114.81, while euro/dollar gained 0.4 percent to 0.9447.
