NEW YORK, – Intel Corp., the world's No. 1 semiconductor maker, said Tuesday it will sell consumer devices, starting with a portable digital audio player, which could offset slowing growth in microprocessor sales to PC makers.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, which derives 80 percent of its sales and profits from microprocessors, expects its new businesses to post sales growth of more than 50 percent, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Intel said the Pocket Concert audio player would feature up to four hours of music programming capability and 128 MB of memory for storing digital audio in MP3 and Windows formats. The company will display the product on Friday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The audio player as well as an accessory kit will be available nationwide in February at most computer stores and online retailers. The player is priced at $299.99 and the kit is priced at $59.99.

Shares of Intel closed at $30-1/16 in Nasdaq trading on Friday, near the low end of their 52-week range, $29-13/16 to $75-13/16.
