In the 60s my father earned a meager salary of $50-$60 per week. Despite his meager salary and being the sole bread winner in the house, he managed to raise a family of four debt free. He paid for his house, bought a car, had a savings account and managed to take us all on vacation to Italy every couple of years.

Today, an average family of four needs to have both parents working just to barely get by. And to get by they must resort to credit cards. So I guess there is some truth in what you are saying. But don't expect the Fed to share our experiences. They live in their own little isolated communes away from the working class. And when you talk to them about the "poor average stiff getting screwed" they seem to think it's more of a Dear Abbey issue than one for Dear Allan.
