davidd, The banks are terra incognita for the investor in Japan. Since they are in financial territory we've never seen here, or at least not since the early 20th century when we had savings in the economy, it is hard for us to know just how much trouble they are in. Or, if their American counterparts in derivatives trades are taking small or huge risks.

One bright portfolio manager of a Japanese fund, who is intelligent despite having a Nobel Prize in Economics, never touches the banks, long or short. He says he simply can't find a way to account for them in his models.
