Put me in the camp that believes that the larger effects are not good -- would be better to allow employees to participate in an unleveraged manner -- matching through 401k at most, report compensation as compensation and otherwise pay employees for performance ... the option gold rush has been very destructive on the whole IMO

Sandeep:

Surely you must not be serious. Do you by chance work for Microsoft because I see you are a recent arrival to this thread and usually hangout at the MSFT thread ?

A few years back Harvard Business Review had an article where they compared the business performance of companies with different compensation plans, stock options, no options etc. The study showed that SAS Institute NC, which is a private company had one of the most loyal and happy workforce. Plus their business performance was on par with many publicly traded companies where stock options are doled out to everybody.

Stock options ala MSFT, CSCO and INTC style are basically huge pyramid schemes that leverage on bull market mania and investor irrational exuberance. Such pyramid schemes can and do backfire as it is now happening. You will see a steady stream of rats fleeing the sinking ships like MSFT and CSCO.

Business performance has a lot to do with business cycles and demand and macro environment as MSFT is finding out. Even if the option holding employees are highly productive and produce a lot of software if there is no end-demand the productivity will do jack-chit to profits and stock price.

I think you hace a simplistic view of options.

Simba

<Stock options (given responsibly) allow employees at all levels to participate in company's well-being and the stake they have in company's success is higher with the options. That does lead to increase in productivity. I am firmly convinced of that. >

Well, so does increased salaries or a Turkey at Thanksgiving then, same thing.
