As is often the case, theory doesn't always match up to reality. The signal through the plaster walls is absolutely much weaker than through open air.

I have a utility that came with the equipment that measures the signal strength. I should clarify that "throughput" is the wrong word. I was not actually transmitting data at a full 11Mbps or 5Mbps. I believe that the actual throughput would be 1/2 of the rates listed (at best). Standard 802.11b stuff.
