Unable to. His contract is written such that the salary cap hit would be much too much. We are about $10 million over already. Butler's contract was redone. Farve is likely to get a lifetime blockbuster deal that is salary cap "friendly" (a term I don't understand cause you pay the piper down the road) and several others will be redone. Dorsey is likely to be either redone at a substantial cut or he will be elsewhere, likely elsewhere. The team talked to Free about redoing his contract and he balked. He knows he has them between a rock and a hard place.

Naturally, that is what Free would do....he cares only for number 1.

I really hope he finds religion, he can be a capable number 1 receiver if he adjusts his attitude and his off season work ethic. If neither happens, he is a very expensive bench warmer. The early evidence is the latter at this point.
