So I was planning out the next upgrade, and my local computer store had a special Christmas deal on 1.2GHz Athlons, so I picked one up. However, it completely slipped my mind that we had a 1GHz processor in our server, and a processor of that speed simply won't work in SMP mode with a 1.2GHz chip (the planned upgrade is an SMP rig... we're still waiting on a mobo though!).

I followed your link to the site that is giving away the 1.2GHz Athlon and found this explanation for it. Is this guy just completely confused? My only guess is that they currently have a P3 server and he didn't know there was a difference between socket 370 and socket A, but that still does not explain the speed mismatch nonsense.
