The problem goes with democracy. The voter is often loathe to accept that his opinion is worthless, accept in reflecting the most general interests of society. Politicians are already engaged in flattery by pretending to care much what their constituents think, following public opinion rather than leading it. It is necessary, up to a point, to attend to polls and constituent pressure in order to be elected. Beyond that irreducible minimum, the public should be treated as an interested but not terribly well- informed party. "Populism" is stupidity, and both parties have laid claim to it. We delegate for a reason. No one is in a position to be well- informed on all matters of public importance, especially when they require technical expertise (or at least the guidance of experts) or being privy to restricted information. Public accountability, or a willingness to listen to informed sources outside the government, does not require the pretense that policy should be shaped by public opinion........
