Peter,

I think it was pretty clear that the reason Microsoft bought Great Plains is because the acquisition enhances the appeal of their .Net iniative for the smaller companies. The new scenario strengthens Siebel's value chain in my mind.

I noticed this acquisition also. I think what this really reveals is the fact that Microsoft is still very much a small business company and not an enterprise software company. I think this was a good move on their part. There is a ton a money to be made servicing small businesses and the resources required to build and maintain the appropriate channel infrastructure are an immense barrier to competitive entry. Long term Siebel will have trouble moving down market to address this segment.
