It is entirely possible that the eventual bottom in the stock market is a year away. What the Fed is doing is to ensure that the stock market declines don't become a runaway train. The economy needs to execute a soft landing, but unless the stock-market also executes a soft landing, the economy won't. It will crash.

Greenspan is looking to guide the stock market lower. If he succeeds in his attempt, it will be yet another feather in his cap.
