The US economy share of world trade has increased in the last few years to something over 30%.

Add to that the economies of Canada, Japan, Korea, China, Australia and S.America and you have quite a big trading block all of which is being covered by cdma 2000 networks.

Indeed the Worlds first and so far only 3G network is in operation today in Korea and it is cdma2000.

Cdma2000 is a system designed to provide mobile internet on a 24/365 always on basis. This will no doubt be of significant interest to vast numbers of Americans and of course Japanese and Koreans. But how many Americans actually travel abroad and of those how many go to places other than I have listed above?

I think that still leaves quite a large market. While i'm sure that the other QCOM property aka WCDMA can provide a similar service it is not the same in fact it is nowhere near the same as HDR cdma2000. May I refer you to some of the more technical people here should you need the exact details of that.

So it will really not be necessary to to have roaming to areas that exclude cdma2000 in order for the cdma SPs in the Americas, Asia and Australasia to have a very good business.

The ability to roam internationally is overhyped. The majority of world cannot afford trips to foreign lands unless associated with business. Ask yourself, what percentage of Americans take trips to Europe for business or pleasure. Very small percentage. Those that do could probably well afford a rental phone or one of those pre-paid phones (if they need or want a phone at all).

The majority of American's who do take vacations do so within the US, Canada, and Mexico. All of which are covered by CDMA.

International roaming rates are so high because there isn't a huge demand for it.

- rajala,

<< There is another theory also. According to that, the impediment to the usefulness of CDMA2000 networks stems from two simple facts:

1) your subscribers don´t roam
2) nobody roams in your network >>

That has oft been referred to as "The Achilles Heel of CDMA".

The results are evident in carrier selection of technology for 3G IMT-2000 implementation.

Sad ... but one of the major decision factors in technology selection.

CDG is now a member of Global Roaming Forum, and things will change, but windows of opportunity only stay open for a period of time.
