Eric L: Cautionary point well taken.

Qualcomm in particular is at not only an inflection point, but a series of them.

Trying to use a rear view mirror look - especially a quantitative one - as a guide to the future is not likely to be particularly useful IMO for Qualcomm in this case. (As an example, the statistical info we have reflects voice heavily, that in the future will reflect data heavily)

I have mentioned before my experience in trying to find quantitative proxies for quality, since quality is key.

Difficult. And much depends on whether past is really prologue or a weak reed on which to lean.

Qualcomm is not only at the cusp of the data wireless/internet nexus but is also in a major launch of a series of new and powerful initiatives.

What to do?

My suggestion is that we concentrate on looking ahead through the windshield, and while we look through the rear view mirror to try to track the past, we do not assume that the past is a valid predictor of the future.

This is why I think Ben's and your keeping us up on the standards process is crucial, as is progress in current spectrum in both CDMA land and GSM land.

Suggest that while trying to decide in a "fuzzy" situation is not easy, it is better than relying primarily on what past "facts" we have as our guide.

What we need to try to accomplish is to figure out as best we can what the "facts" will be in both Qualcomm's short and long term future.

Best.
