Dear Neocon: I think I was just trying to say which is better. NO DEBT and lower GNP. or SOME DEBT and higher GNP. What I am getting at is to pay off the debt means to keep taxes high at least for the next 10 years or so. Many economists think high taxes are a drag on the economy, thus less GNP. If instead debt is repaid more gradually and taxes lowered GNP should rise and DEBT should be a smaller proportion of the GNP. In NO CASE am I or George advocating deficit spending. JDN
