We are being held hostage to our non existant energy policy

Absolutely... But the reason I stated that I have concerns about OPEC is that we're currently some 20% more dependent on imported oil than we were during the Arab Oil Embargo of the '70s. And if we see the mid-east erupt into regional warfare, the Arab OPEC members could easily exert their influence upon us to stay out of it, or back the Arab side over Israel.

And while I'm all for private market solutions over governmental meddling, if there is anything that justifies governmental subsidization, or incentives, it's the energy sector.

Afterall, as you stated the Clinton/Gore administration has been hell-bent to prevent domestic production, which equates to a subsidy for foriegn producers.

I also understand that many of these oil producing nations are heavily indebted and dependent on oil revenues, but I don't think such a dependency would overcome any domestic pressure against anyone who tries to support Israel in a conflict.

Thus, we are at the whim of radical Arab politics and our national security options are decreased because of our dependency on imported oil.

Btw, as a libertarian, you might enjoy the opinions of one of my favorite Sci-fi writers with regard to nuclear energy vs coal, as well as other assorted topics:

Someone told me about his website this week and I've been enjoying perusing it. And especially this one that deals with whether the planet Venus is a young, or old planet:
