Of course it is a good idea to waste money on the missile defense scheme !! After all, those corporate contributors need a big payback for their campaign contributions.

At the same time neither the Congress nor Bush want to raise the compensation of the military to competitive levels. No campaign contributions and very few votes there. So it is much better to just talk a good game about how awful the Dems treat military personnel.

Instead of a tax cut, how about a 10% pay raise for the military? I would vote for that. and while they are at it they could spend some money on maintenance, fuel, etc. to improve readiness.

But it is far better in the minds of the politicos to waste some money on weapons systems that are not needed. Lots of votes and contributions there.
