"The toilet seat cost a lot less than that, probably around $50,"

What really costs on these things is the paper trail (you decide about the pun) that needs to follow things for military contracts and the guarantee of having all that data archived and retrievable for an insanely long time. In addition, they specifications were not such that you could go down to Home Depot and buy the damn thing and how many were needed, 50? To top it all of, it probably was a horribly uncomfortable toilet seat...

Dan,

The toilet seat cost a lot less than that, probably around $50, but the military contractor's overhead costs had to be allocated to all products.

Plus you have to factor in his profit margin....sounds like a good company in which to buy shares....probably their ROE is well over 20. <g>
