One quarter of all gas in storage entering the heating season was withdrawn in four weeks in December. The American Gas Assn. reported Wednesday the largest withdrawal so far this season in the week ending Dec 29, 209 Bcf, dropping working gas in storage nationwide to 1.729 Tcf, or 52.5% of capacity. For the four weeks of December, an even 700 Bcf was withdrawn. The year-to-year deficit climbed to 708 Bcf, or 29%, while the deficit from the five-year average rose to 558 Bcf, or 24%. AGA's five-year average showed a withdrawal of 135 Bcf and an average working-gas volume of 2.287 Tcf. In the same week a year ago, 133 Bcf was withdrawn to lower working gas to 2.437 Tcf, 75% of capacity. Two years ago, 158 Bcf was withdrawn to lower storage to 2.645 Tcf, 81% of capacity.
Three years ago, withdrawal of 96 Bcf reduced storage volumes to 2.170 Tcf, 68% of capacity. Four years ago, withdrawal of 128 Bcf dropped storage to 2.064 Tcf, 65% of capacity. And five years ago, withdrawal of 160 Bcf lowered storage to 2.118 Tcf, 66% of capacity. Working gas last week dropped 63 Bcf in the producing region, to 410 Bcf (715 Bcf a year ago), 142 Bcf in the consuming region east, to 1.033 Tcf (1.339 Tcf a year ago), and 4 Bcf in the consuming region west, to 286 Bcf (383 Bcf a year ago). Regionally, working-gas levels as a percentage of full capacity were 43.0% in the producing region (down from 49.6% the previous week); 56.3% in the consuming region east (down from 64.0%); and 56.5% in the consuming region west (down from 57.3%).
