Our deficit is the greatest investment ever made

I knew there was a reason why I was willing to go the limit on my credit cards and take the family all over the world.

Now all I have to do is go on welfare and get the government to give me more of that money they collect in taxes.

<<The deficits were caused by Reagan tax cut plus a buildup in military spending the cuts kept our economy afloat
The buildup of the military destroyed the USSR, we arms raced them into bankruptcy>>

The defecit was not caused by tax cuts...if you look at gov't Revenues on an 18 month delay( from the date of tax reduction) every single cut led to an increase in tax revenue. Counter-intuitive as this may seem, it is so.

the increase in debt (of a not unsubstantial trillion dollars) was the result of arms spending.

Hmmm... you have clearly read too much US right wing propaganda, Perry. By the same people who supported the most massive military spending spree in the history of mankind. Just to notice that there is no enemy. Oops.

So there was clearly a need for an explanation. Led by Casper Weinberger, the chief engineer of waste. Still the single most expensive living man in the universe IMO. So SSSR collapsed because, er, we spent so much on the military. Oh dear.

Perry, SSSR would have collapsed anyway. Communism did not work.

I visited the country several times in those days and the absolute waste and inefficiency that ruled was out of this world. In a planned and systematic way anything to slow down the economy. And it did.

Consider that Cuba or N. Korea would discontinue their military spending, but would keep the ideology. Would that save their sorry commie butt economies?
