are you turning off your background apps? antivirus software will cause this condition.

using the close program dialog (ctrl+alt+delete) shutdown everything except explorer and systray and try running defrag again.

Turn off everything in your tray that is writing to your hard-drive in the background. Antivirus software does this, and many other programs do it as well.
