Hard to get too excited about a $4 chip, especially since there are several others with CMOS tuners. Great accomplishment, but not an exciting addition to the business. One thing that is bothersome from that release is the following statement:

"Additionally, Broadcom has shipped 13 million cable modem chips to customers whose products have received the CableLabs-Certified seal."

Something is not right here. There are just over 3 million cable modem subscribers (and that includes old proprietary modems too). If the modem vendors have a backlog of 10 million modems, they won't be ordering any new chips for about 2-3 years based on subscriber growth forecasts. Maybe it was supposed to be 1.3 million chips. Let's hope so anyway.
