Yeah...

Kinda funny when you think about it. First we had mechanical switches.. then we went to analog... then digital. Now we're using optics (analog) and internal to the switching fabrics are these MEMS arrays - mechanical devices. Pretty funny - 'eh.

Today 3D MEMS is the only viable solution for large scale 1000x1000+ optical switching fabrics. They do have the limitation in that they are mechanical however so sparing both within the array and for the entire array are very very important. I think the jury is still out. Of course there are likely to be other innovations going forward but 3D MEMS is the state of the art I believe.

Was there any discussion there of alternatives?
