Many thanks again mark. Just in case any of you are wondering, I have printed this as well as all of the instructions material that you guys have sent my way.

I will probably try the install on Sunday. If you never hear from me again on SI you can safely assume that I took a wrong turn during the installation.

Mark

I wanted to update you on my endeavor; installing a 40 gig HD in a 1998 HP machine which had 2 gig HD.

I scraped all of my plans to install a new win-98 OS because I was still getting error messages after my 3rd attempt 2 weeks ago. Based on the info that you and others sent me I don’t think that I had a win-98 version that would allow either a clean install or an upgrade. I tried both win-98 and win-98 2nd edition.

This is what I did.

I left the original HD in the case but installed the 40 gig just above it. I unplugged the old drive and plugged straight into the new one. I did not use a jumper between the two drives because the old drive has errors on it. I will format it at a later date.

I took the HP recovery disk and placed it in the CD and rebooted and did the recovery on the new drive. After the install was complete the system rebooted but not into Windows 95. It said "No PT" insert disk and strike any key.

I placed the boot disk in A: drive and hit enter and it booted into windows. I checked the integrity of the OS and was satisfied that it was good enough to upgrade to 98.
I have an original win-98 upgrade disk so I did the upgrade from it instead of the newer versions of windows.

On reboot I got the same message in the DOS start up screen "No PT", so I just hit the enter button and into 98 we went without a hitch. (no boot disk was needed)

Then loaded earthlinks latest CD ISP disk which incorporates many new IE bells and whistles, virtual-machine, RA-G2 ect.

The PC is now online and running smoothly.

I still get No PT when booting, maybe you or others will know why I get that message. Have not run scan disk yet, open for suggestions but very satisfied with the results today.

My thanks to you and this thread for all of your kind help.

Reid
