ANGLOGOLD DRIVES GOLD MARKETING INTO AFRICA

Date: Friday, January 05, 2001

Dar-Es-Salaam: AngloGold, the world’s largest gold producer, tonight restated its commitment to marketing Africa’s centuries-old gold heritage to 21st century consumers.
In an announcement at the Tanzania region finals of the Face of Africa contest, the continent’s most prestigious modeling contest co-sponsored by AngloGold and MNet, Osbourne Majuru, representing Geita Gold Mine - the AngloGold/Ashanti Joint Venture in Tanzania’s Mwanza province, commented that there is no better platform to draw attention to Africa’s most inspirational metal, than to adorn with it Africa’s most beautiful faces.

"The Face of Africa Contest is intrinsically entwined with the world of high fashion, and through its two-year association with the contest, AngloGold is reintroducing the historical allure of gold to the trend-setters in international fashion. And, so, the Face of Africa becomes the Face of African gold, and the showcase for African gold for AngloGold internationally,” said Majuru.

“Following AngloGold’s acquisition of a 50% stake in Geita Gold Mine late last year, this event is a further statement of AngloGold’s commitment to Tanzania, its people and its heritage. We are not just a gold mining company – we are a gold company – as committed to marketing the metal for the benefit of the industry as a whole, as we are to realising the full potential of the mineral resources in the countries in which we operate.”

The annual Face of Africa contest is just one link in AngloGold’s gold marketing chain. AngloGold also supports other fashion-related events to spotlight gold in fashion and jewellery design and influence consumer demand for gold products.

The company has sponsored several international gold jewellery design competitions and goldsmith training interventions – all with a view to growing and developing Africa’s global competitiveness in the design and production of gold jewellery.
